Why Choose Prestige WallWorX

Wallpaper installation is one of the most visually unforgiving jobs in residential finishing work. A seam that's off by a fraction of an inch, a bubble that shows under raking light, or a pattern that doesn't align at corners will be visible every day. Prestige WallWorX has been installing wallpaper across the Twin Cities metro since 2010, and we bring the same prep discipline to hanging paper that we apply to every surface finish job we do. The substrate has to be right before a single strip goes up. Call (612) 419-2789 to talk through your project.

What drives the cost of wallpaper installation? Primarily room size, ceiling height, pattern repeat (a large geometric repeat wastes significantly more paper than a simple texture), the condition of the walls, and whether sizing or primer is needed before hanging. A single accent wall in a dining room is a very different scope from papering a full stairwell or a room with multiple windows and door casings requiring precise trimming. Broadly, professional wallpaper installation in the Twin Cities area runs from a few hundred dollars for a single wall to $1,500 or more for a full room with a complex pattern. Every job is different. Contact Prestige WallWorX for an accurate estimate.

Our Work

Why Substrate Prep Determines Whether the Installation Lasts

Wallpaper installation fails for one of two reasons: the substrate wasn't prepared correctly, or the hanging technique was rushed. Twin Cities homes built before the 1990s frequently have walls that were never sized or primed before the original paper went up. On those walls, pulling the old paper strips down the drywall face paper with it, creating a surface that will telegraph every imperfection through a new hang. We assess the substrate before we quote. If the walls need skim-coating, sizing, or a dedicated wallpaper primer, that's part of the scope, not an afterthought. If there's existing damage or old paper residue that needs addressing, our wallpaper removal and repair service handles that as a first step. Sound walls are what good installation depends on.

What We Offer

Our Wallpaper Installation Process

Wall Assessment and Sizing

We test the wall surface before we recommend hanging directly. If it's porous, uneven, or has residue from a previous hang, we prime or skim-coat first. A wall that isn't ready is a wall that bubbles.

Material Calculation

We measure the room, calculate pattern repeat waste, and confirm the paper quantity before the project begins. Running short mid-room is not an option on a dye lot that may no longer be available.

Plumb Lines and Layout

We plumb and mark the room before the first strip goes up. Starting square is what keeps seams straight over a full wall. Rooms that aren't plumb require adjustment planning at corners.

Seam Alignment and Matching

Seams are butted, not overlapped, for a flat result. Pattern matching at seams is checked before adhesive is applied. We work strip by strip and smooth each panel fully before moving on.

Trim and Cutout Precision

Outlets, switches, windows, and door casings are trimmed cleanly. We use a fresh blade for every cut on a finished surface. Ragged trim edges at fixtures are one of the most common signs of careless work.

Cleanup During and After

We wipe down every seam and surface with a clean damp sponge after hanging to remove any adhesive residue before it dries. Dried paste left on the paper face is nearly impossible to remove cleanly.

What We See in Twin Cities Homes and How We Plan for It

The Twin Cities metro has a wide range of home vintages, and that matters for wallpaper. Homes in neighborhoods like Edina and St. Louis Park built in the 1950s and 1960s often have multiple layers of old paper over plaster. Homes in Chanhassen and Eden Prairie built in the 1990s and 2000s may have drywall that was never properly primed before the builder-grade paper went up. Either condition creates challenges that an installer needs to anticipate before the project starts. We've worked across enough of these neighborhoods to know what to look for on the initial walk-through. Pre-1980 plaster walls in older lake-area communities typically accept paper very well once properly sized. Standard 1/2-inch drywall in newer construction needs a wallpaper-specific primer to prevent adhesion issues at the seams over time.

Wallpaper Styles and Design Trends Worth Knowing

Wallpaper is genuinely back as a design choice, and the options available today are dramatically different from the vinyl patterns most people remember from the 1980s. Grasscloth and natural fiber wallcoverings are popular in living rooms and dining areas because they add texture without pattern. Large-scale geometric prints are common in primary bedrooms and home offices. Paintable wallpaper, which takes any color and adds dimensional texture to walls, works well in rooms where the color direction isn't fixed yet. Mural-style wallpaper across a single accent wall has become one of the most requested applications in the metro, particularly in entry halls and behind built-in bookshelves. Whatever the pattern type, the same installation fundamentals apply: straight walls, accurate seams, clean cuts, and no adhesive residue. The design choice is yours. The technical execution is ours.

FAQ

Wallpaper Installation FAQs

Questions we hear most often from Twin Cities homeowners before a wallpaper installation project.

Do the walls need any preparation before you install wallpaper? +
It depends on what's underneath. If the walls are smooth, properly primed, and free of damage, we can often hang directly. If there's old paper residue, surface damage, or bare drywall that was never sized, we prep first. Hanging over an unready substrate leads to bubbles, seam failure, and paper that pulls away from the wall within a year. We assess the wall on the initial walk-through before we commit to a hanging-only scope.
How do you calculate how much wallpaper a room needs? +
We measure the room, document the pattern repeat from the paper spec, and calculate accordingly. A straight texture or small random repeat wastes very little. A large geometric or botanical pattern with a 24-inch or greater repeat can require 15 to 25 percent more paper to account for alignment cuts. We give you an exact yardage number before you order so you don't run short on a dye lot mid-project.
How do you handle pattern matching in corners and around doorways? +
Pattern matching is about planning the layout before the first strip goes up. We determine the most visible wall and center the pattern there, then work outward to the corners. This minimizes the visual impact of partial pattern repeats at corners, which are unavoidable in most rooms. On a large repeat, this planning step makes the difference between a result that looks intentional and one that looks like the installer didn't think it through.
Can you install grasscloth or natural fiber wallcoverings? +
Grasscloth requires a different approach from standard paper or vinyl-backed wallcovering. The natural fiber substrate absorbs adhesive differently, and the seams on most grasscloth products are meant to be visible, not hidden. You paste the wall, not the paper, and work in shorter sections. We've installed grasscloth in a number of older lake-area homes around the metro where the texture works well with the architecture, so we know what to expect from both the material and the conditions.
What causes bubbles in wallpaper and will they go away on their own? +
Bubbles right after installation are mostly air and water from the paste, and they typically flatten as the paper dries and the adhesive cures over 24 to 72 hours. Bubbles that remain after full drying indicate either trapped air that wasn't smoothed out during installation or a substrate adhesion problem. If a bubble stays past the three-day mark, that's something we address. We do a walkthrough with you after the paper has cured, not just right after hanging.

We paste the wall rather than the paper and work in shorter sections. We've installed grasscloth in lake-area and older metro homes where the texture works well with the architecture.

How long does professional wallpaper installation take? +
A single accent wall typically takes half a day to a full day including prep and cleanup. A full room with a complex pattern and multiple windows or door cutouts can take two days. Stairwells and tall spaces with access challenges take longer. We give you a realistic timeline during the estimate visit so the schedule doesn't shift on you mid-project.
