Hardness and Durability
Enamel cures to a harder film than standard interior latex. High-touch surfaces like cabinet doors and trim take daily impact. Standard paint chalks and mars over time. A properly applied enamel system doesn't.
Hard, glass-like enamel finishes for cabinetry, trim, and millwork. 16 years of meticulous prep and factory-quality results. Call for a free estimate.
Custom enameling isn't a coat of paint. It's a multi-step surface treatment that builds a hard, glass-like finish your cabinetry, trim, and millwork simply can't achieve with standard latex. The process demands exact substrate preparation, the right primer system, and an applicator who understands how enamel behaves as it cures. We've refined that process over 16 years, and we back every custom enameling project with a workmanship guarantee. If a surface we enameled shows adhesion failure within the warranty period, we return and make it right. Call (612) 419 2789 to schedule a walk-through.
What drives cost on a custom enameling job? Surface condition is the biggest variable. Raw wood that's never been finished moves faster than substrate that's been painted three times and needs full strip and reprep. Scope matters too: a single vanity differs substantially from a full kitchen's worth of cabinetry and crown. As a general range, custom enameling projects across the Twin Cities Metro run from a few hundred dollars for isolated trim work to several thousand for whole-room millwork programs. Every job is different — contact Prestige WallWorX for an accurate estimate.
Most finish failures trace back to what happens before the first coat goes on. We de-gloss every surface, fill and sand all voids and grain, then apply a bonding primer formulated for the specific substrate. That sequence creates the adhesion layer that holds everything above it. After primer, we sand again to 220-grit or finer, then apply enamel in thin, controlled coats. Each coat is allowed to flash fully before the next. We don't rush dry times. The result is a surface free of brush strokes, sags, and witness lines. That's what a factory-like finish actually means in practice.
Not every surface responds to enamel the same way. Bare MDF absorbs primer aggressively and requires a sealer coat before any topcoat goes on. Stained wood needs de-glossing and shellac-based primer to prevent tannin bleed. Previously painted surfaces must be tested for compatibility before anything new goes on top. Our cabinet painting work uses the same enamel system on drawer boxes, face frames, and doors. For woodwork enameling across baseboards, casings, and crown, the challenge is surface continuity across long linear runs. We treat each substrate type on its own terms rather than applying a single process across every surface.
Skipping prep is the single most common reason a custom enamel finish fails within a year. Enamel is unforgiving. It telegraphs every surface imperfection, every grain line, every skip in primer coverage. We sand between every coat. We address voids, nail holes, and substrate damage before primer touches the surface. In older homes throughout the Twin Cities Metro, painted woodwork often carries decades of layered finish that needs to be assessed for compatibility before new enamel goes on. If water damage has compromised any substrate, we address that first. Sound prep isn't a cost-adder. It's why the finish is still performing five years out.
Great service begins and ends with experienced and friendly professionals who communicate clearly from day one. We walk every surface with you before work starts, identify any substrate concerns, and set realistic expectations on timeline. During the project, we maintain a clean, protected workspace. Furniture and floors get covered before prep begins. We don't disappear mid-project. You'll know what's happening and when. On final walkthrough, we review every surface together under raking light. That's where we catch anything that needs attention before we leave. If you've worked with painters who don't operate that way, the difference is obvious from the first conversation.
These two finishes serve different purposes. Here's what separates them.
Enamel cures to a harder film than standard interior latex. High-touch surfaces like cabinet doors and trim take daily impact. Standard paint chalks and mars over time. A properly applied enamel system doesn't.
Enamel's self-leveling properties, combined with meticulous prep and fine-grit sanding between coats, produce a finish that reads smooth under direct light. Standard brush-applied latex rarely achieves that without the same prep protocol.
Enamel surfaces wipe clean without finish degradation. Kitchen cabinetry and bath vanities are the clearest use cases. Grease, moisture, and cleaning products that would dull standard paint leave an enamel finish unaffected.
Honestly, not every surface needs enamel. Ceiling paint, closet interiors, utility spaces: those are right for interior painting with standard products. Enamel earns its cost on surfaces where the finish is both visible and functional every day.
