About Us

Why Choose Prestige WallWorX

Ceiling work covers everything from patching a water-stained section above your kitchen to stripping decades-old popcorn texture across an entire floor of a home. It's one of those categories where the range of what's possible is wide, and the gap between a mediocre result and a genuinely clean finish is obvious every single day you live in the space. Prestige WallWorX has been doing this work across the Twin Cities metro since 2010, and with 104 five-star reviews behind us, the quality isn't something we talk about — it's something you'll see on your ceiling. Call (612) 419 2789 to get a straight answer about what your ceiling actually needs.

The scope of a ceiling job drives cost more than almost any other factor: square footage, current texture type, how much prep work the surface needs, whether there's water damage repair involved, ceiling height, and the finish you're after. Popcorn ceiling removal in the Twin Cities metro typically runs a wide range depending on those variables — a single small room looks very different from an open-concept main floor with 10-foot ceilings. Refinishing over a smooth, well-prepped surface costs less than correcting years of patching with mismatched compound. Every job is different — contact Prestige WallWorX for an accurate estimate.

Our Work

What Ceiling Work Actually Includes

People use 'ceiling work' to mean a lot of different things, and that's fair. It's not a tightly defined trade term. For us, it covers popcorn and texture removal, skim coating, crack and hole repair, water damage repair and repainting, new texture application, and full ceiling repaints after any of the above. We also handle ceiling work that connects to interior painting projects — walls and ceilings done together almost always produce a cleaner result than doing them separately. If you're not sure what category your ceiling problem falls into, describe it when you call. We'll tell you exactly what it is.

What We Offer

Our Ceiling Repair and Refinishing Process

Honest Assessment First

We look at the surface before we quote anything. Ceilings hide issues — moisture, previous patch jobs done badly, texture that's delaminating beneath the top coat. We don't write a number until we know what we're actually dealing with.

Proper Surface Preparation

This is where most shortcuts happen, and it's where most failures start. We scrape, sand, prime, and skim coat as needed before any texture or paint goes on. Skipping prep is the single fastest way to get a ceiling that looks bad in six months.

Texture Matching or Clean Refinishing

You'll tell us whether you want to match what's there, go smooth, or try something different. We can match most existing knockdown, orange peel, and skip-trowel patterns. Smooth ceilings are unforgiving — they require the right preparation and the right applicator to look right under raking light.

Clean Paint Application

We cut clean edges, protect everything below, and apply ceiling paint in even passes. If the ceiling connects to a full interior painting scope, we sequence the work so nothing gets double-coated accidentally or missed.

Final Walkthrough

We don't consider a ceiling job finished until we've looked at it in real light conditions — both artificial and natural where possible. Flaws that hide under one light source show up under another. We catch them before you do.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Across the Twin Cities Metro

Popcorn ceiling removal is the most common ceiling job we get called for across the metro. Most of the homes that still have it were built between the 1950s and 1980s, and the texture was applied as a fast, cheap way to hide imperfections in the drywall beneath. Removing it right means wetting the material, scraping without gouging the drywall, and then addressing whatever the surface looks like underneath — which is often not pretty. Homes built before 1980 should have the texture tested for asbestos before any scraping begins; we'll advise you on that during the assessment. Once the texture is gone, the ceiling needs to be skim coated, primed, and painted to look finished.

at the same time. Painters serving [Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Chaska, and surrounding communities](/blog/painter-eden-prairie-minnesota) are familiar with the vintage of homes that still have this texture — we've seen it hundreds of times.

When to Call a Professional Instead of Patching It Yourself

Small nail holes and minor scuffs — a homeowner with the right compound and patience can handle those. Anything larger, textured, or connected to moisture is a different situation. Ceiling cracks that run along drywall seams usually mean the tape is failing, not just the compound on top of it. Patching over failed tape produces a patch that fails again. Water stains mean the source needs to be confirmed before you repaint anything — paint over an active leak and you're just redecorating the problem. And texture matching is genuinely hard. There's no shame in getting it wrong; we see the results of well-intentioned DIY repairs regularly, and fixing them costs more than calling us first would have.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ceiling work? +
Ceiling work refers to any repair, resurfacing, or refinishing task performed on a ceiling surface. This includes crack and hole patching, popcorn or texture removal, skim coating to create a smooth finish, texture reapplication, stain treatment after water intrusion, and repainting. The scope can range from a single small patch to stripping and refinishing an entire home's ceilings as part of a larger renovation.
What is the average cost to install or repair a ceiling? +
Cost varies significantly based on the type of work, ceiling height, square footage, and surface condition. Basic patching on a small area is a fraction of what full popcorn removal with skim coating and repainting across an open floor plan would run. Texture matching and skim coating are labor-intensive and reflect accordingly. Every job is different — contact Prestige WallWorX for an accurate estimate based on your specific situation.
Is replacing or refinishing a ceiling a big job? +
It depends on scope and condition. A straightforward repaint with minor prep work moves quickly. Popcorn removal followed by skim coating, priming, and painting on a large square footage is a multi-day process done right. Ceiling work that involves drywall replacement, joint retaping, or multiple coats of compound to correct prior patch jobs takes longer. Rushing any of these stages is how you end up with a ceiling that looks fine at first and fails in a year.
What are the three types of ceilings? +
The three main ceiling categories are flat or smooth ceilings, textured ceilings, and specialty or architectural ceilings. Smooth ceilings require precise skim coating and application since imperfections show under raking light. Textured ceilings include patterns like knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, and popcorn — each with different application and removal methods. Architectural ceilings include coffered, tray, vaulted, and beamed designs that require custom approaches for both prep and painting.
How do you match an existing ceiling texture when patching? +
Texture matching requires identifying the original technique — whether it was applied by sprayer, hand trowel, or roller — and replicating both the pattern and the build thickness. Spray textures like knockdown and orange peel are matched by adjusting air pressure and material viscosity. Hand-applied textures like skip trowel require practice and judgment. Even with good matching, lighting angle can reveal patch edges, which is why feathering the repair well beyond the damaged area produces better results than a tight patch.
Does popcorn ceiling texture in older Twin Cities homes contain asbestos? +
Potentially, yes. Popcorn ceiling texture applied before 1980 commonly contained asbestos fibers, which were added for fire resistance and durability. Homes built in Minnesota during the 1950s through late 1970s should have texture samples tested by a certified lab before any scraping or removal begins. Disturbing asbestos-containing material without proper containment creates a health and liability risk. We advise clients on this during our initial assessment before any removal work starts.
Why does my ceiling crack keep coming back after I patch it? +
Recurring cracks almost always mean the underlying drywall tape has failed, not just the compound layer above it. If you skim over failed tape without removing and replacing it, the compound cracks again as the tape continues to separate. Cracks that run directly along seams are the most common indicator. Settlement cracks in older homes may also reflect seasonal movement in the structure, which requires a flexible joint treatment rather than rigid compound alone.
